THE visiting Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) of England, currently in Zimbabwe for their historic tour after 60 years, took time off the pitch to experience the country’s breathtaking wildlife at Antelope Park in Gweru — an outing that showcased the seamless blend between sport and tourism.

The MCC’s return marks their first tour of Zimbabwe since 1964/65, underlining the deepening cricketing and cultural ties between the two nations.

In an update, the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry said, “The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) from England, currently in Zimbabwe for their historic tour after 60 years, took time off the pitch to immerse themselves in the country’s breathtaking wildlife at Antelope Park in Gweru.

“The team experienced the wonder of Zimbabwe’s natural beauty through an exhilarating lion encounter where they witnessed a rare lion hunt, interacted closely with elephants and learnt about the country’s tourism and conservation efforts that promote responsible travel and wildlife protection.

“Their adventure also brought them face-to-face with the endangered white rhino, a powerful reminder of Zimbabwe’s commitment to preserving its rich natural heritage.

This unforgettable experience beautifully intertwined sport and tourism, showcasing Zimbabwe as a destination where adventure, nature and authentic cultural experiences unite in harmony.”

The visit by the MCC is seen as a powerful endorsement of Zimbabwe’s growing appeal as both a sporting and tourism destination. It reflects the nation’s efforts to promote its natural heritage and hospitality to the world, while strengthening international sporting relations.

By stepping off the cricket field and into the wild heart of the country, the English side not only celebrated the spirit of the game but also helped shine a spotlight on Zimbabwe’s unmatched tourism offerings from its majestic wildlife to its enduring culture of warmth and welcome.

Sports tourism is a type of tourism activity that refers to the travel experience of the tourist who either observes as a spectator or actively participates in a sporting event generally involving commercial and non-commercial activities of a competitive nature, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

For a country such as Zimbabwe, sports tourism’s potential cannot be overlooked.

Recent events such as hosting the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup qualifiers have put Harare and Bulawayo on the global map, buzzing with international fans.

Both domestic and international visitors have provided a welcome boost to the hospitality industry, showcasing Zimbabwe’s ability to stage world-class sporting events.
