FOR a few fleeting moments, Zimbabwe Under-19 Women had a place at the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2027 within touching distance.
Having recovered from 38 for five, they entered the final over needing six runs with their last pair at the crease.
But Nigeria Under-19 Women held their nerve to seal a dramatic four-run victory in the Africa regional qualifier final at the TCA Cricket Arena in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.
Zimbabwe managed only a single run from the decisive over before Vanessa Mayedza was bowled with one delivery remaining, bringing their innings to an agonising end on 94 all out in pursuit of 99.
The heartbreak was all the more painful after Salem Museka and Makanaka Zinyama had revived the chase with a courageous 47-run sixth-wicket partnership that dragged Zimbabwe back from the brink and seemingly placed victory within their grasp.
Instead, Nigeria claimed Africa’s sole ticket to next year’s global tournament, bringing a cruel end to an otherwise impressive Zimbabwe campaign in which they had reached the final unbeaten.
There was little indication of the drama to come when Nigeria, having won the toss and elected to bat, were restricted to 98 for six from their 20 overs. Zimbabwe made an excellent start with the ball, reducing their opponents to 16 for two inside five overs as the bowlers immediately took control.
Jessica Bieni and Beauty Oguai steadied the Nigerian innings with a 38-run partnership for the third wicket, although the Zimbabwe attack ensured neither batter was able to break free.
With a seemingly attainable target in sight, Nicolette Nyika and Mutasa gave Zimbabwe a promising start by putting on 27 for the opening wicket.
The complexion of the chase changed dramatically in the fifth over, however, when Usen Peace struck twice.
Nyika, who had scored 18 from 19 deliveries with three fours, was the first to go as Chukwuonye held on to a catch.
Captain Lorraine Pemhiwa faced two deliveries before falling to the same bowler-fielder combination without scoring, leaving Zimbabwe suddenly wobbling at 27 for two.
Peace tightened Nigeria’s grip in the seventh over when she bowled Mutasa for 13 from 14 balls, an innings that included three boundaries.
Beloved Biza added five before Shola Adekunle bowled her, reducing Zimbabwe to 37 for four in the eighth over.
The pressure intensified in the following over when Garutsa was caught behind for one, leaving Zimbabwe’s World Cup ambitions in danger at 38 for five.
Museka and Zinyama refused to surrender.
Showing remarkable composure under pressure, the pair rebuilt the innings one run at a time, gradually drawing Zimbabwe back into the contest. Their 47-run partnership carried the total to 85 and left Zimbabwe needing only 14 more runs from 14 deliveries, with four wickets still in hand.
For Zimbabwe, the disappointment was immense.
They had begun the qualifier with conviction, progressed to the final without defeat and fought their way back into the contest when their chances appeared to be fading.
Ultimately, however, four runs separated them from a place on the world stage – the narrowest of margins bringing an agonising end to a campaign filled with promise, resilience and belief.
