A 57-YEAR-OLD man Zimpapers newspaper vendor has been in hospital since Christmas day after he became a victim of a hit and run car accident in Bulawayo.
Mr Dean Buys, who is admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital, was walking alone at the intersection of Fife Street and First Avenue when he was hit by a car at around 6PM as he attempted to cross the road.
“I don’t know what really happened, but just in a blink of an eye as I was crossing the road, I saw myself under a big vehicle which was like a kombi or a truck. In a few seconds, the vehicle pushed me off the road and I just collapsed,” said Mr Buys.
He said after about 20 minutes, one of his friends saw him lying next to the road and phoned an ambulance to ferry him to the hospital.
Yesterday, Chronicle visited Mr Buys in hospital. He has not been able to walk since the accident and he said he still feels pain on his spinal cord and on the thigh.
“I am still feeling pains on my thigh and on my spinal cord. Health experts told me to buy a lumbar corset, which would give me a bit of balance when walking after they release me. The lumbar corset costs $8 400 or US$40 and at present, I am desperately in need of financial assistance to buy it,” said Mr Buys.
He said he does not have children and lives with his unemployed brother and a sister at their family home in Thorngrove suburb.
His mother lives at their rural home.
Zimpapers Business Development Officer for Southern Region, Mr Martin Sibanda wished Mr Buys a quick recovery.
“I wish this accident does not get Dean down for a long time so that he comes back to normal life and continues selling Zimpapers publications,” said Mr Sibanda.
