ZIMPAPERS reporters in Mashonaland West scooped several awards at the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) Provincial Journalism and Media Awards held in Chinhoyi recently.
Herald reporter Conrad Mupesa took home the Agriculture Reporter of the Year and the Environment Reporter of the Year awards.
He was also the runner-up in the Arts, Entertainment and Sports, and in the Overall Reporter of the Year categories out of the 14 awards at stake.
The 11th awards also saw H-Metro’s duo of Paul Pindani and Lovemore Chazingwa scooping five awards at the same glittering event.
Pindani, the tabloid’s reporter based in Chinhoyi, bagged four awards including Crime and Court Reporter of the Year and Arts Entertainment of the Year awards.
To cap a fine evening for the Zimpapers stable, Kadoma correspondent, Lovemore Chazingwa, scooped the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Reporter of the Year award.
Mupesa thanked his editor at The Herald, Hatred Zenenga, and other senior staff media personnel for nurturing his writing skills.
He said the dominance of the Zimpapers stable at the awards ceremony was a sign that it remained a force to reckon with in the media industry.
Speaking during the ceremony, Minister of Provincial Affairs and Devolution Marian Chombo, who was the guest of honour challenged journalists in the province to write stories that promote development.
“Media plays a pivotal role in economic development of our province and the country at large. Journalists and other media players are catalysts of this economic and social development we all seek as human beings.
“The media amplifies Government policies and directives whilst through various news outlets both private and public the same Government gets feedback from citizens through the media. I would like to challenge journalists from Mashonaland West in particular to remain professional and commit to promote the province’s brand of being Mash Best through responsible reporting,” she said.
She discouraged taking of brown envelopes by journalists adding that her office was going to ensure land is availed for residential purposes by the media personnel.
Zimplats head of communication, Hama Saburi, said the platinum mining giant will continue to support the media awards.
