THE Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks) has today dismissed widely circulated report of stray lions allegedly seen in Nehwangura village in Chigodora, which had petrified local residents.
The report was filed by Farai Gwitirwa, a villager under Headman Chigodora, in Chief Zimunya’s area.
Gwitirwa recounted an incident where he allegedly encountered a pride of lions – both male and female – around 7:30am while walking to work.
His dogs advanced towards the wild animals, prompting him to retreat quickly to safety.
Following the report, Zimparks yesterday dispatched a team led by its community liaison officer, Dr Jona Mashava, to investigate the sighting.
After a thorough scrutiny, including identifying animal droppings, the team concluded that the sightings were likely a case of mistaken identity.
The droppings were confirmed to belong to hyenas, not lions.
Dr Mashava has assured the public that the search is ongoing and any new developments will be promptly communicated.
Meanwhile, Mutare Rural District Council and Zimparks have issued an awareness message urging villagers in the Greenland area to reduce movements, especially near thickets.
Members of the public are also advised to ensure children travel in groups, preferably with parental guidance.
Villagers are encouraged to remain calm and report any new sightings to authorities immediately.
