ZIMPLATS’ Selous Metallurgical Complex has scooped the national safety award from the occupational safety and health division of the National Social Security Authority (NSSA).
The awards were presented in Harare last week where Bulawayo-based How Mine came second, with Sable Chemicals landing the third place.
Zimplats general manager Louis Mabiza received the award, the second to be won by the company.
“We’ve not shed any blood over the past year. We’re elated that we’ve gone for 974 days without any lost time due to injury,” said Mabiza.
“The company has come a long way since it started implementing a safety, health and environment management system some years back.”
How Mine emerged top in the provincial awards for Matabeleland regional quarrying sector.
Sable Chemicals, which came third nationally, also won the top provincial award for the Midlands and first again in the provincial manufacturing sector.
Zimplats mines platinum and nine other minerals which occur in the same rocks.
Close to 50 percent of the total volumes mined at Zimplats is platinum with the remainder covering other metals.
The firm is 87 percent owned by the world’s second biggest platinum producer, Impala.
