THE Zimbabwe Revenue Authority has officially started the construction of a new state-of-the-art headquarters at Mt Pleasant Business Park in Harare as the Second Republic’s drive to modernise key institutions gains momentum.
Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony, yesterday which coincided with Zimra’s celebration of International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 9001:2015 Quality Management System certification.
This mega project is expected to be implemented in phases with the whole project set to be finalised by 2030, as the nation achieves an upper middle-income economy.
Speaking during the ceremony yesterday, Professor Mthuli said Zimra cannot remain a tenant of the very clients it regulates.
“We want to break ground for you to build a proper head office… We need an environment of prestige, an environment of respect, a tranquil environment, where you can work well with your team, with your board,” he said.
Prof Ncube also revealed that the mega-project will be funded through a Public-Private Partnership.
The authority becomes the fourth Revenue Authority in Africa to achieve the globally recognised quality benchmark.
This certification is a recognised benchmark for quality, efficiency, and continual improvement.
He further lauded the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority for attaining the ISO 9001:2015 certification, urging the authority to continue leading by example.
However, he added that the authority must continue reviewing its workers’ remuneration.
“ . . .But also, as we do that, we should not forget our staff. We must, therefore, make every effort—between the Treasury, yourselves, and Zimra —to keep improving the working conditions of our staff.”
Zimra Commissioner-General Regina Chinamasa described the ground-breaking ceremony as a major step towards the realisation of an upper middle-income economy by 2030.
“We are very excited,” she said. “We were renting our offices in the CBD, and this marks a milestone, and we are looking at delivery of a head office within the NDS2 period. So, 2030, we should see Zimra relocating to its head office.”
She expressed equal excitement on receiving the certification, stating that it demonstrates an improvement in service delivery.
