AS the second-tier football leagues in Zimbabwe approach their climactic conclusion, the contenders for promotion to the premiership are emerging from the ranks.
In the Zifa Southern Region Division One, log leaders Arenel Movers are poised for a thrilling finale. They’ve established a commanding 10-point lead over second-placed ZPC Hwange. This weekend, they are set to host Mosi Rovers, hailing from Victoria Falls, at the iconic White City Stadium.
Arena Movers aim to extend their unbeaten run and solidify their defensive record, having conceded just two goals in 25 matches thus far. With such impressive statistics, it’s hard to imagine any team other than Kudzai Mandire’s side being crowned Southern Region champions.
The Northern Region Division One league presents a tight and tense battle, with only four points separating the top four contenders. Leading the charge is FC Wangu Mazodze with 51 points, followed closely by Tenax, Rusitu Tigers, and Bikita Minerals, all standing at 47 points. Tenax, representing the army, holds a crucial game in hand, which they aim to exploit to its fullest.
While FC Wangu Mazodze won’t be in action this weekend, it provides an opportunity for the other top-four teams to make up ground and intensify the race.
In the Northern Region, log leaders Black Mambas maintain their consistent and steady form, with just two losses in 27 matches. They recently secured a 1-0 victory against 12th-placed Come Again FC, boasting 57 points and a six-point lead over Harare City. The latter, eager to reclaim their place in the premiership after relegation last season, faces a challenging fixture against Herentals Under 20 FC, the league’s previous season runners-up.
Meanwhile, in the Central Region Soccer League, a mere four points separate the top two teams, TelOne and Tongogara FC. TelOne’s previous experience in the Premier League positions them as seasoned contenders in the pursuit of promotion.
