A LOCAL empowerment group, ZIMSPORT for Economic Development, is transforming Zimbabwe’s sporting landscape by turning youth talent into livelihoods, using tournaments and grassroots partnerships to fight drug abuse and promote economic inclusion.
From boxing bonanzas to donating soccer kits in township schools, the initiative is not just about games; it is about giving young people a chance to earn, belong, and build futures through their God‑given talents.
Speaking to Zimpapers in Harare yesterday, ZIMSPORT4ED national chairperson Cde Gabriel Togarepi emphasised that sport is a tool for both talent development and economic empowerment and helping youths avoid drugs while earning from their skills.
“We are identifying talent among our young people from all corners of our country. Our key objective is to bring the economic development aspect into our sport, to make sure that the young people can actually earn a living,” he said.
He singled out tournaments like the Munhumutapa Tournament and the Independent Boxing Bonanza, which have revived interest in sport and given participants financial rewards.
“Every young person who participated in these tournaments went back home with something,” he said.
“We want to commercialise the game and bring out the best in terms of economic advantage.”
Zimbabwe National Soccer Men’s Team captain Marvellous Nakamba emphasised the importance of grassroots support to young athletes.
“Marvelous Nakamba Foundation is partnering ZimsportDevelopment 4ED on the Africa Day Sports Tournament,” he said.
“We are providing strategic support that includes 21 soccer kits for schools in Ushewokunze.”
He praised ZIMSPORT4ED’s leadership for creating opportunities that inspire young people and strengthen communities.
“The foundation expressed strong support for grassroots sports development. We commend the ZimsportD4ED leadership for such positive sports initiatives.”
