THE Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) and National Social Security Authority (NSSA) embarked on an Informal Economy Social Protection Priority Needs Assessment Survey (IESPPNASA) last week.
The countrywide exercise is expected to end on September 1 and will be conducted under the provisions of the Census and Statistics Act (Chapter 10:29).
According to ZimStat, the main objective of the survey is to inform the designing and costing of the informal sector social security schemes in terms of benefit types and levels, contribution structures, collection mechanisms, compliance enforcement, scheme administration, and stakeholder preferences.
“IESPPNAS will be conducted across all provinces, with collected information treated with strict confidentiality and solely used for statistical purposes. The survey will be conducted under the provisions of the Census and Statistics Act (Chapter 10:29),” it said.
ZimStat said the survey will be conducted in selected households by field personnel who will have official letters and identity cards.
Nssa and ZimStats have over the years collaborated to develop a social security scheme for informal sector workers, who constitute the largest and growing labour force globally and play critical roles in both developed and developing countries.
The IESPPNAS aims to gather essential data on the needs of informal workers to create a tailored social security scheme that addresses their unique challenges, such as income insecurity and limited access to financial services.
The initiative aligns with Zimbabwe’s vision to become an upper middle-income economy by 2030, stressing the importance of inclusivity and social equity.
