The Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (Zimura) has extended a US$500 incapacitation allowance to sungura legend Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria, who is battling health complications.

Zakaria, a pillar of the sungura genre, recently urged fans to keep him in their prayers after missing a family show in Harare, an absence that raised alarm among his supporters. He later confirmed that he has been unwell for some time.
“I just managed to send my band, PA system, and my son Franco to the show,” he said.

Zimura representatives visited the ailing musician at his Chitungwiza home last week, offering a one-off payment of US$500 along with basic groceries.

Speaking on the initiative, Zimura’s Director of Information, Media, and Publicity, Alexio “GC” Gwenzi, said the gesture reflects the organisation’s commitment to members’ welfare beyond copyright matters.

“Zakaria has been a Zimura member since 1990. The incapacitation allowance is designed for members unable to perform or create due to illness or other legitimate reasons. After assessing the case, we provide US$500 and basic groceries,” said GC.

He added that Zimura remains steadfast in supporting its members throughout their artistic journeys.

“Our benefits extend beyond incapacitation support. We offer gratuities for members aged 75 and above with over 20 years of continuous membership, funeral assistance, legal advice, copyright education, recommendation letters, and free digital music distribution,” he said. – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
