The Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA) Board of Directors has removed three board members from office following what it described as serious breaches of duties and conduct prejudicial to the organisation.
In a press statement released on Thursday, ZIMURA confirmed the removal of Mr Gift Amuli, Mr Joseph Garakara and Mr Dereck Mpofu from the ZIMURA Council.
The decision was effected through a formal board resolution passed on Wednesday January 21, 2026, in line with the association’s Articles of Association.
ZIMURA said the removal followed an unsanctioned press conference convened by the three directors on January 19, 2026, without board approval.
It said the move violated established corporate communication protocols and amounted to misrepresentation of the organisation.
The Board further accused the trio of issuing unsubstantiated and defamatory statements during the press engagement, alleging that the remarks were made without evidence, due process or any formal legal conviction, thereby bringing the association into disrepute.
ZIMURA said the directors opted for “public sensationalism” instead of utilising internal dispute resolution mechanisms, demonstrating a disregard for governance structures and constitutional channels they were sworn to uphold.
“The continued presence of these errant members poses an existential threat to the stability and governability of ZIMURA,” said the organisation, adding that their actions risked institutional paralysis and threatened the collective interests and financial security of the association’s membership.
The Board said the termination of the three directorships was necessary to protect the integrity of the organisation and to ensure the uninterrupted collection and distribution of royalties.
