THE Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) has so far disbursed close to 1,5 million litres of fuel and ZiG2,7 billion to road authorities for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the nation’s road network.
The disbursements align with Zinara’s strategic agenda to capacitate road authorities with funds generated from the national vehicle licensing programme and road tolls.
The fuel is an additional facility to the regular financial disbursements that Zinara makes to road authorities and councils who must use it for roadworks.
It covers everything, from the trucks bringing materials and heavy equipment, to the graders on remote country roads.
Authorities have to account for the fuel they receive in the same way they account for monetary transfers from Zinara.
In an interview, Zinara board chairperson Dr George Manyaya confirmed the developments and said this will enable road authorities to implement their projects fully.
“The Road Authorities were not capacitated, not only financially, but also in terms of technical expertise and training and development. So what we did is that we now have bi-annual conferences and trainings where we are training them on issues to do with acquittals.
“So what also happened is that we are now engaging all the road authorities; we are working together. And I must say now that 91 percent, if you look at the schedule that we have come up with, 91 percent are technically-enabled and they have improved,” he said.
