THE Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) donated 150 textbooks worth about US$4 094 to Guwe High School in Nkayi District to aid in the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem).
This donation was part of Zinwa’s ongoing corporate social responsibility efforts countrywide and was presented to Guwe High last Thursday.
Zinwa provincial head and Gwayi Catchment area manager, Engineer Hassad Tobve, stated that Guwe High was among the first to benefit from their community support programme.
“We see ourselves as agents in helping reduce and bridging gaps, which are partly to do with the availability of resources such as textbooks and other learning material,” he said.

Eng Tobve said promoting Stem subjects in rural schools was critical to bridge the existing gap in learning and teaching and capacitating rural learners to embrace science-related professions.
“Our work is highly reliant on Stem careers such as civil engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, hydrogeologists, hydrologists, water quality technicians, water quality scientists and civil engineering technicians, among others,” he said.
“In providing Stem support to schools in rural areas, we strongly hold the hope and belief that these schools shall produce the future skills and manpower to achieve these goals.”
Matabeleland North Provincial Education Director, Mr Jabulani Mpofu, expressed gratitude to Zinwa, saying the donation will transform the teaching of science subjects at the school.

“This act of kindness is not just a gift of books but a significant contribution to the future of our pupils and a great deed to the future of our nation,” he said.
In a rapidly evolving world, Mr Mpofu said the field of Stem is crucial as it has become the backbone of innovation, economic development and growth
He stressed that Stem education fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for the advancement of pupils in Zimbabwe.
“As we move towards 2030, Zimbabwe has set a very bold vision to transform into an upper middle-income society,” said Mr Mpofu.

He said this vision requires a well-educated and skilled populace that can contribute to the development and growth of the economy in meaningful ways.
“This donation invests in the future leaders, engineers, scientists and innovators of our country. The textbooks will, thus, provide the pupils with the knowledge they need to understand both global and local contexts in Stem fields,” said Mr Mpofu.
“Your commitment to education and community development is highly commendable. By investing in our school, you are not only enhancing education resources but also demonstrating your belief in the value of knowledge and power to transform lives.”
