The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has introduced US dollar- indexed tariffs starting this month in response to fluctuation in costs of key resources.
The new tariff system applies to both raw and treated water clients.
In a statement Zinwa corporate communications and marketing manager Mrs Marjorie Munyonga confirmed the development saying the move has been necessitated by the need to preserve the value of water bills in light of the current exchange rate fluctuations.
“These fluctuations have triggered sharp increases in the prices of critical goods and services required for sustainable service delivery in local currency and these include fuel, spares, water treatment chemicals, electricity, maintenance of vehicles and equipment as well as some statutory obligations, “she said.
She said all outstanding balances have also been converted to foreign currency as a way of preserving the value of the monies owed to ZINWA.
The authority has since dispatched individual letters to clients advising them of this position.
In line with the current Government position on the use of multi-currencies and the need to promote the use of the local currency, clients are urged to settle their bills in their currency of choice using the prevailing auction rate on the day of payment.
For raw water, Zinwa has pegged tariffs for industry, commercial agriculture(A2) and local authorities at US$14,35 per mega litre while the commercial agriculture (estates)was pegged at US$19,37/ML, mines will pay US$80/ML,communal will now pay US$2,15 and A1 farmers will pay US$2,73/ML.
For domestic use, Zinwa is now charging US$1.04 for 1-10 cubic metre band. From 11 to 20 cubic metres, users will now pay $1,66.
From 21 to 30cubic metres, users will pay$US1.80 while for 31 to 40cubic metres users will pay US$1,94 while from 41to 50 cubic metres users will pay US$2,08. For a band above 50 cubic metres, users will now pay US$2,15 and for monthly fixed charge users will pay US$10.
Government is now paying US$1,66 for 1-10 cubic metre band. For 11 to 20cubic metre band it will pay US$1,80, for 21to30 it will pay US$1.80 while for 31 to 40 it will pay US$2,08 and for 41 to 50 cubic metre band users will pay US$2,15. For a band above 50 cubic metres Government will pay US$2,21.
Parastatals will pay US$1,66 for 1 to10 cubic metre band,while from 11 to 20 cubic metre band, users will pay US$1,80 and for 21 to30 cubic metre band users will pay US $1,94 while for 31 to 40 cubic metre band users will pay US$2.08 while for 41 to 50 it will pay US$2,15. For above 50 cubic metres Parastatals will now pay US$2,21.
Business will now pay US$1,52 for 1 to 25cubic metre band while from 26 to 50 it will pay US$1,66 while for 51 to 100 cubic metre band users will pay US$2,08 and for over 100 cubic metres users are expected to pay US$2,77.
Institutions, schools and churches are expected to pay US$1,52 for 1 to 25 cubic metre band while from 26 to 50 they are expected to pay US$1,66, For 51 to 100 they will pay US$2,08 while US$2,21 will be paid for above 100.
