Zinwa urged to expedite completion of Nkayi water project

In an interview with Chronicle in Nkayi on Tuesday, the district council’s chairperson Councillor Kufakwezwe Ncube expressed concern over delays in the completion of the project.
He said the three-kilometre project, which was supposed to be completed last year, had been thrown into uncertainty.

“Zinwa told us that they were procuring the pipes for the project but the project is still in limbo to date. They only managed to dig the trenches which are now a death trap to members of the public,” said Mr Ncube.
“The pipeline connects water from Nkayi Growth Point to the old business centre. We urge them to finish the project quickly so that residents can benefit from it.”
Contacted for comment Gwayi Catchment manager, Mr Fortune Musona said Zinwa was still in the process of procuring the pipes and assured residents that the  project will be completed this year.

“This project is run under the Public Sector Investment Programme. It is only a question of procuring the pipes and once that is done, the project will not take long.
“We have put an order for the  pipes. I went to Harare recently and they promised that the materials would be availed soon. The project will be done at the same time with similar projects in Lupane and Inyathi.

“At Inyathi, we are connecting water pipes from Pollards Dam to the Mahlabathini community while in Lupane we are connecting water pipes from Bubi-Lupane Dam to Lupane town.”
Meanwhile, Clr Ncube expressed concern over increased stream bank cultivation along Shangani River and urged villagers to desist from the practice.

He also called on the Government to decentralise its development programmes to cater for youths in the district.
