Zinwa warns of flood risk as dams spill in Gwanda

Zimpapers Reporter

THE Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has issued an urgent notice advising stakeholders and communities in and around Gwanda of a heightened risk of flooding following incessant rains in the Mzingwane Catchment.

In a statement, Zinwa said major dams in the catchment have filled up and are now spilling.

Mtshabezi Dam has already filled up and is spilling, while the Tuli River and Shashe River are experiencing high flows and have overtopped their banks.

Zinwa also noted that Insiza Dam is almost full and is expected to start spilling within the next few hours if the current rate of inflows is sustained.

“Downstream communities are therefore advised to be vigilant, not to attempt to cross flooded rivers, and to be on high alert for possible flooding,” said Zinwa.

The authority further urged that all water abstraction equipment along river channels should be removed or adequately secured.

Zinwa said it is closely monitoring the situation and will keep stakeholders and communities updated on any new developments as they occur.
