THE Zimbabwe Pool Association (Zipa) has set an ambitious goal, to establish a professionally run pool league in every district across the country by the end of 2026.
Zipa public relations manager and Bulawayo Provincial Pool Association Vice President, Donald Wadawu, said the sport’s rapid growth has been driven by commitment and discipline within its structures.
“Cue sport, particularly pool, has experienced remarkable growth in Zimbabwe, transforming from a recreational activity into a source of livelihood for many,” he said.
“With the giant leap forward and growth of running leagues in Zimbabwe, by the end of 2026 every district will have a professionally run league affiliated to Zipa through our provincial structures.”
Wadawu said 2025 had already seen professional pool spreading to new areas such as Binga, Plumtree, Filabusi, Mvuma and Shamva.
“The number of professional pool players has risen, as shown by the growing participation in monthly tournaments held by the National Elite Pool Players Association of Zimbabwe (Nepaz), Zimbabwe Women in Pool Association (ZWPA), and the recently concluded national team qualifiers,” he said.
Pool’s rise has also created new opportunities off the table.
The sport now sustains livelihoods through the manufacture of pool tables, supply of accessories, and service industries linked to transport and entertainment.
Beyond the economy, Wadawu said pool has helped steer young people away from drug and substance abuse while fostering social unity.
“Pool is building communities, bringing about cohesion and social change,” he said.
Zipa is also pushing to take the game into schools, churches, and community halls as part of its long term development plan. Wadawu believes pool has evolved into more than a pastime, it now connects recreation, economic empowerment, and social well-being across Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, Queens Pool Academy and Premier Pool Club have progressed to the finals of the Bulawayo Province Pool Association (BPPA) Cup.
Queens Pool Academy, who are the cup’s defending champions, eliminated Renegades, on a 10-7 scoreline.
Premier Pool Club got the better of Dropmark on a 10-6 scoreline.
The BPPA Cup finals will be played some time in December at Queens Sports Club. — @FungaiMuderere
