The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has reiterated its dedication to creating a safe and conducive environment for journalists.
In a statement during the just-ended International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, ZMC said the safety of journalists is of paramount importance.
This year’s theme, “Safety of Journalists in Crises and Emergencies”, underscores the ongoing challenges faced by journalists worldwide.
“Zimbabwe’s Constitution, the Freedom of Information Act, and Zimbabwe Media Commission Act provide a strong legal framework for press freedom,” said the Commission in a statement.
ZMC said the laws empower journalists to access information and hold authorities accountable, thereby fostering transparency and informing public discourse.
“By engaging with stakeholders and promoting ethical standards, the Commission aims to create a media landscape that is professional, accessible and aligned with national interests,” reads the Commission’s statement.
“The ZMC urges all stakeholders to collaborate in safeguarding journalists.”
The Commission said by protecting media freedom, it safeguards democracy and the public’s right to information.
