The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) is set to host a fundraising brunch today to support children with living albinism at the Harare Main Post Office.
Albinism is a rare genetic condition caused by mutations of certain genes that affect the amount of melanin produced by the body.
ZOU Student Representative Council president, ltayi Manuel, said proceeds from the fundraising will be channelled towards families that have children with albinism who are in need of support.
“As we celebrate the month of love, the SRC would like to propose a special initiative to love and support children with albinism in our community,” he said.
“Among the beneficiaries is a family in Hatcliffe that has four children living with albinism. We are therefore encouraging the community and students at large to attend.”
“Funds raised will also be used to provide medical supplies, sun protection lotions and educational resources to help improve the quality of life for these children.
“Children with albinism often face numerous challenges including sun sensitivity, sight, discrimination, stigma and violence.”
“By spreading love, compassion, kindness and support to children with albinism, we can make a meaningful impact in their lives” he said.
Manuel said donations such as clothing, stationery, shoes and sunscreens would be welcome.
“Everyone is encouraged to attend this event as myths and truths about albinism will be explored. Some of the guest will share their stories on albinism. Entry is free and there will be prizes for the best dressed couple.”
