THE Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) has ramped up national electricity generation to 1 553 megawatts (MW) as of 2 May 2025, a notable increase from the 1 304MW recorded the previous day.
According to ZPC daily production updates, the 249MW surge is largely attributed to improved output from Hwange Power Station and modest contributions from Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
Hwange Power Station contributed the bulk of the supply, generating 1 078MW—up from 979MW. IPPs produced 75MW, a slight rise from 73MW. Meanwhile, Kariba Power Station generated 400MW, an improvement from 252MW.
Despite the increase, Kariba continues to operate below capacity due to low water levels in Lake Kariba.
The increase in electricity generation comes at a critical time, coinciding with the onset of the winter wheat farming season. The Government has ring-fenced 150MW specifically for winter wheat production—up from 120MW during last year’s winter cropping season—in a bid to ensure uninterrupted power supply for irrigation and processing during the strategic agricultural period.
