ZPC seeks US$12 million for gas project

investment capital.
Energy and Power Development Minister Elton Mangoma said an initial five wells would be drilled.
“The initial plan is to drill five wells and the initial capital required is US$12 million,” he said.
The project involves drilling a series of wells as well as connecting them to generators. About five megawatts will be generated from each well.
Minister Mangoma also said ZPC was yet to be granted a methane gas concession by Government.
“I have implored the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development to grant ZPC a concession but there have been delays. Hopefully, the matter will be addressed soon.”
Implementation of the Lupane gas project, which was granted National Project Status by Government in 2007, is a short-term measure to alleviate the country’s power woes. Zimbabwe, which has resorted to power rationing, is currently producing slightly above 1 000MW against demand estimated at over 2 000MW.
The country’s untapped methane gas reserves stand at about 27 trillion cubic feet. Methane gas is considered a cheaper source of energy.
With the country’s economy now on the mend, the demand for power has surged, presenting an opportunity for investors to invest in the sector.
The Government has granted numerous Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to offset the power deficit but most of the projects are yet to take off. — New Ziana.
