THE 2017 Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Commissioner General’s Sports Gala gets underway at Ntabazinduna Training School today with six administrative regions taking part in eight sporting disciplines.

Being held under the theme “Correctional Development Through Sports”, the gala will be officially opened by Commissioner Wonder Chisora and officially closed on Saturday by Commissioner-General Paradzai Zimondi, a keen golfer.

This year’s gala, according to principal correctional officer Garainashe Moyo, will have Ntabazinduna Training Depot standing as a region in addition to Matabeleland, Mashonaland, Manicaland, Midlands/Masvingo and National Headquarters.

The officers will compete in soccer, netball, darts, chess, pool, volleyball, tennis, tug of war and golf.

“The gala provides a platform for us to select a team that will represent Zimbabwe at the Sadc Games later this year,” said Moyo.

This year’s games are also set to be used to select teams to represent the prisons and correctional services at the Zimbabwe National Youth Games that get underway in Hwange in two weeks’ time.

The Commissioner General Sports Gala started in 2002 and each region has had the opportunity to host the event.
