THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has recorded encouraging progress in its agricultural ventures after a promising tobacco crop at Khami Complex was hailed as a successful pilot project by Commissioner-General Dr Cyril Ngawaite Chihobvu.

Commissioner-General Dr Chihobvu expressed satisfaction during a tour of the Khami Complex, where he commended officers and staff under the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province for their collective effort in ensuring the success of the project.

“I am impressed by the tobacco crop that I am seeing here today (Thursday) and this is the result of everyone’s collective effort,” said Commissioner-General Dr Chihobvu.

He said the commitment and teamwork demonstrated by the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province team would have long-term benefits for the province, particularly in contributing towards economic empowerment and self-sustenance within the correctional service.

“The spirit and commitment that you have demonstrated will go a long way in building your province and at the end of the season I would like to see the financial returns from this project,” he said.

Apart from the tobacco crop, the Commissioner-General also applauded the province for maintaining high standards in maize production, noting that the integrated approach to agriculture was yielding positive results.

“Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, I am truly impressed by the high standards you have set, not only with the tobacco crop but also with the maize crop I observed today,” said Commissioner-General Dr Chihobvu.

He urged the province to sustain the momentum and further strengthen its agricultural initiatives by investing in modern infrastructure such as a greenhouse to support future projects.

“I am more than prepared to assist,” he said.

ZPCS has in recent years intensified agricultural production across its institutions as part of efforts to enhance food security, skills development and income generation, in line with Government’s broader empowerment and rehabilitation objectives.
