ZPCS in 23 medal haul

THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services managed to bring home a total of 23 medals from the Sadc Prisons, Penitentiary, Correctional Services Sports and Cultural Exchange games held in Botswana for the past week. The teams were selection in Ntabazinduna back in June and they did not disappoint in the event that saw nine countries taking part.

The nine countries namely South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Botswana, Angola, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi and Zimbabwe participated.

The event had the following sporting disciplines male athletes compete in football, tug-of-war while females squared off against each other in netball while both genders took part in darts, volleyball and athletics.

The team managed 11 gold medals with eight in athletics, one netball, soccer and volleyball while five silver medals came from four athletics and one from tug of-war as there were seven bronze medals six from athletics and one from men volleyball.

In soccer the beat Swaziland 1-1, Lesotho 1-0, South Africa 1-0 on their way to the finals.

Team captain Isaac Pitamuja said it was through team work that they managed to win and the competition was a bit tough.

“There was improved competition as compared to the 2006 games held in Durban.
