Former Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZPRA) combatants say reclaiming properties acquired during the liberation struggle is not just about restitution, but a strategic move to contribute to the country’s economic transformation in line with Vision 2030.
Through their investment vehicle, Nitram Properties, the former fighters are on a mission to recover and revitalise a wide range of assets, including farms, shops, mines, wildlife sanctuaries, hotels, fuel stations and urban estates scattered across the country.
Speaking on behalf of the board, Nitram Properties chairperson, Cde Volta Ekem Moyo, said the asset reclamation drive is in line with the national agenda of achieving upper-middle-income status by 2030.
“Reopening our businesses and farms will create thousands of jobs. It will also bring increased business activity that will generate additional jobs in supply chains and related sectors, further boosting employment and stimulating local economies,” he said.
Cde Moyo said resuscitating the agricultural estates will strengthen local food production, enhance food security, and reduce dependence on imports.
“This increase in output is essential for achieving food security and reducing reliance on imports. Demonstrating a commitment to property rights will encourage foreign and domestic investors to enter the market, creating a more competitive business environment that supports economic growth,” he said.
“By reclaiming these properties, our businesses will expand tax bases and provide the Government with additional revenue for public services and infrastructure development.”
Cde Moyo emphasised that beyond economics, the initiative aligns with patriotism and community empowerment.
“Our operations will support communities through job creation and better access to services. We’re also committed to implementing community development programmes such as health and education initiatives, which will improve quality of life and foster social cohesion,” he said.
Once the properties are returned, Cde Moyo said, there will be a notable rise in agricultural production as Nitram promotes sustainable farming practices to ensure long-term productivity and environmental conservation.
Importantly, Cde Moyo noted that the project aligns with the National Peace and Reconciliation Act, as it addresses historical injustices and promotes national unity through collaboration with civil society and local authorities.
“This engagement is crucial for building a united front toward national development. Reclaiming these assets is not about personal or organisational gain, it’s a step towards rebuilding Zimbabwe in a manner that honours the sacrifices of liberation war veterans,” he said.
Cde Moyo commended President Mnangagwa and Vice President Kembo Mohadi for their role in facilitating the process, describing it as a landmark in recognising the contributions of former freedom fighters.
“The Second Republic, led by His Excellency President Mnangagwa, made this possible. His instruction to proceed with transparency and the appointment of Vice President Mohadi to oversee the process underscores his commitment to our cause.”
He urged patience among beneficiaries as final preparations are underway to begin property allocation. Nitram has taken measures to ensure a fair and transparent process, with representation for the families of deceased veterans.
“We are confident that when the time comes, the process will be conducted with dignity and fairness. The President is a man of his word, and we trust in his leadership.”
Presently, there are 10,000 registered members under the organisation. Over 100 properties have already been identified and documented.
In 2023, hundreds of ex-ZPRA combatants from all ten provinces met in Bulawayo to form a 13-member committee tasked with compiling a list of assets and engaging the Government.
The late Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube convened the meeting under the instruction of Zanu-PF Second Secretary, Cde Mohadi.
The committee is chaired by Cde Moyo (Matabeleland South), deputised by Cde Queen Maligwa (Matabeleland North), with Cde Buster Magwizi (Mashonaland West) serving as the secretary for information and publicity.
Cde Moyo said once the properties are returned, a formal board will be set up to oversee their distribution, ensuring inclusivity for all stakeholders, including the families of deceased veterans.
“We are ready to move forward. This is a significant milestone in acknowledging the sacrifices of liberation heroes, and in shaping a prosperous Zimbabwe for future generations,” he said.
