THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has intensified a nationwide crackdown on the unlawful possession of explosives, arresting several suspects following a recent deadly vehicle explosion that claimed at least 15 lives.

Police said the ongoing blitz was triggered by an incident in which a Toyota Quantum reportedly exploded, killing all its occupants under circumstances that are still under investigation.

Authorities believe the tragedy highlighted the growing threat posed by the illegal handling and transportation of explosive materials.

In a statement, Criminal Investigations Department national spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri said police were committed to safeguarding public safety and national security through targeted operations aimed at removing dangerous substances from communities.

“On April 26, 2026, Innocent Phili (43), of House Number 791, Geneva in Gwanda, was arrested at his residence after detectives allegedly recovered 200 capped fuses and 49 Innopex explogels concealed in his bedroom,” said Det Insp Muteweri.

In a related incident, Paddington Mbango (30), of Mbiko Village under Chief Chingoma in Mberengwa, was apprehended for possessing three emulites and three capped fuses without a permit.

On the same day, Reuben Mpofu (49), of Village 16 under Chief Madhuna in Filabusi, was also arrested after being found in unlawful possession of emulites.

In Kwekwe, police arrested Carlton Chando (29), of 1728/14 Mbizo, after he was allegedly found with 11 capped fuses, 91 Emex cartridges, and an additional box containing 110 cartridges at a local premises.

Police sources said the coordinated operation targeted known hotspots and individuals suspected of dealing in illegal explosives, amid fears that such materials are increasingly being diverted for criminal use, including illegal mining activities and other illicit operations.

All the suspects are expected to appear in court facing charges related to the unlawful possession of explosives.

The ZRP warned that the acquisition, storage and use of explosives are strictly governed by law, and any unauthorized handling constitutes a serious offence under the Explosives Act, which prohibits the purchase, acquisition or possession of explosives without a valid permit.

Authorities urged members of the public to report suspicious activities involving explosives, saying community cooperation remains critical in preventing tragedies similar to the recent vehicle blast.

Police said the nationwide blitz will continue, with more arrests expected as investigations into illegal supply chains and distribution networks intensify.
