THE Zimbabwe Republic Police have clarified that five passengers, including a four-year-old child died on Wednesday morning when a Hungwe Coaches bus overturned after the driver failed to negotiate a traffic circle near Fairmile Hotel in Gweru.

Earlier reports had indicated that six passengers had died in the accident; however, National Police Spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi, in a statement, said five passengers were confirmed dead, with 21 others injured.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident involving a Hungwe Bus in which five people were killed while 21 others were injured today at around 0600 hours at a roundabout near Fairmile Hotel, Gweru,” he said.

Commissioner Nyathi said the driver of the bus failed to negotiate his passage through the roundabout and lost control.

The bus was coming from Botswana.

“Among the dead are four female adults and one female juvenile; 10 of the 21 injured passengers are admitted at Gweru Provincial Hospital,” he said.

Commissioner Nyathi said there was no other vehicle or party involved in the accident besides the bus.

“We also urge the people who are using social media to be responsible and respect the accident victims and their relatives’ privacy,” he said.
