adminIn a statement, police chief spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the force introduced human rights in its syllabus long ago to enhance its members’ skills.
Snr Ass Comm Charamba was responding to reports in the NewsDay that suggested that the human rights course was done at the instigation of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission.
The police chief, noted that the NewsDay, in its story “Chihuri yields to pressure” pre-supposed that Comm Chihuri undertook the course after pressure from the commission.
The NewsDay was reporting a story in which Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission chairperson Mr Jacob Mudenda gave evidence before a Senate Thematic Committee where he talked of an interface with members of the security on human rights issues.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to observe human rights even in the wake of frivolous and uncalled for attacks on this institution. We are a transparent organisation and have at no time denied deserving people access to human rights syllabus,” she said.
It was noted that the journalist responsible “forgot” to write about some hooligans in some political institutions with no regard for human rights.
