ZRP warns against assaulting police officers

A STERN warning has been issued to the general public, with particular emphasis on illegal transport operators, against assaulting, resisting or obstructing police officers in the lawful execution of their duties.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) stressed that such conduct constitutes a criminal offence under the country’s laws and warned that anyone found engaging in such acts will be arrested and brought before the courts to face the full consequences of the law.
The warning follows the circulation of a video on social media showing a taxi operator assaulting a police officer in Mutare.
In a statement posted on X, the ZRP confirmed that the suspect featured in the video had since been arrested.
“Reference is made to a video circulating on social media depicting a police officer being assaulted by a motorist at a service station. The ZRP reports that Brendon Tsakatsa (29), of Number 1285 Chikanga 1, Mutare, has been arrested for assaulting Constable Maxwell Mukumbuzi at a service station in Mutare on 29/06/26,” reads the statement.
The police also reiterated that violence against law enforcement officers will not be condoned under any circumstances.
“The ZRP strongly warns kombi and pirate taxi operators, as well as all members of the public, against assaulting, resisting or obstructing police officers in the lawful execution of their duties. Such conduct constitutes a criminal offence and offenders will be arrested and brought before the courts without fear or favour.”
The ZRP further urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers during the execution of their duties. Where grievances arise regarding police conduct, citizens were encouraged to pursue redress through established legal and administrative channels rather than resorting to violence or taking the law into their own hands.
Acts of violence against police officers do not only undermine the authority of law enforcement but also threaten the broader security and stability of the nation.
When officers entrusted with maintaining law and order become targets of assault, public confidence in the justice system may be eroded, potentially creating an environment in which criminality flourishes.
Although the circulating video does not provide the full circumstances that led to the confrontation, the images nevertheless portray a disturbing scene that raises concerns about respect for the rule of law and the safety of those tasked with enforcing it.
Regardless of the events preceding the incident, assaulting a police officer performing lawful duties is unacceptable and cannot be justified.
If such behaviour is normalised, it risks weakening the country’s law enforcement institutions and fostering a culture of impunity.
A society in which those responsible for protecting the public are themselves subjected to violence without consequence is one in which the rule of law is placed under serious strain.
A nation cannot function without respect for the law, and the effective enforcement of that law depends on the ability of police officers and other law enforcement agencies to discharge their duties without intimidation, obstruction or violence.
Therefore, respect for lawful authority remains a cornerstone of peace, order and national security.
