ZRU appoints new executive

THE Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) will convene at Prince Edward School today for a special meeting to appoint a new executive.

ZRU is presently being run by an interim leadership led by former Sables’ winger Russell Karimazondo following the suspension of the Nyararai Sibanda-led executive in August on charges of maladministration.

The ZRU executive was accused by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) of contributing to the deterioration of rugby in the country.

The SRC also accused ZRU of failing to adhere to provisions of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act by wilfully not seeking clearance for the Zimbabwe women’s rugby team, which toured Botswana on May 27 and when the union hosted the Zambian national teams in June.

ZRU also stands accused of failing to accommodate the visiting Zambian national teams, seriously tarnishing the image and brand of the country.

ZRU chief executive officer Blessing Chiutare confirmed the meeting.

“We aim to set things in motion for the board so that they are at par with aspects of the game,” said Chiutare.

He said part of the meeting’s agenda will be the setting up of new ZRU working committees, regularisation of the suspension of the elected ZRU board, appointments to key positions and unveiling of a turnaround strategy for the union among others. — @khumzallen
