ZIMPAPERS Television Network (ZTN) will tomorrow host the second edition of the Corporate Pool tournament at Harare’s Pakare Paye Arts Centre.

It was revealed that the contest is going to run under the theme “Anti-Drug and Substance Abuse.”

The inaugural edition, which was graced by Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Emily Jesaya, was held in late January at Dam View in Chitungwiza where Delta Beverages, Pacific, CABS, Axis Solutions, FBC Bank, Potraz, QuestLight, Verifying, City Parking, Belgravia, Chitungwiza Ladies, Parliamentand ZTN Prime took part.

“As ZTN we are on an extensive drive to raise awareness about the impact of drug and substance abuse issues that are affecting our communities. We engage various corporates to push the same narrative, putting all hands on deck and assisting each other on how best we can curb the increase in drug and substance abuse.

“This is the second edition of its kind in terms of bringing corporates together through sport to share and enlighten communities on such critical issues. As an integrated media house, we are the voice of the voiceless and as such we then give these corporates the necessary media to voice their concerns against the abuse of drugs,” said Shingi Kanhongo from ZTN Prime.

Deputy Minister Jesaya is on record saying the Government believes pool has the potential to become a big sport in the country. However, she feels the game needs to be played in a more conducive environment to accommodate aspiring players.

“Pool is growing massively in Zimbabwe as there is a lot of interest in the sport. However, we are worried about the venues of some of the tournaments,” said Jesaya.

“As the Government, we are advocating for pool to be played in more conducive places like schools and other decent sporting facilities so that it can accommodate all. We have a crisis of drug abuse among youths, but I am confident sports like pool will go a long way in taking these youths off the streets. Pool is now being played at a professional level in Zimbabwe and many people are making a living out of the sport,” she said.

The country, she added, has a lot of facilities that can also be used to host pool tournaments.
