ZIMBABWE Table Tennis Union (ZTTU) in collaboration with the National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) yesterday held a Level One table tennis coaching clinic at the Drill Hall in Bulawayo.
Twenty-one participants from the police and primary school teachers from Bulawayo’s five districts, Khami, Reigate, Mzilikazi, Umguza and Bulawayo Central, attended the event where they were taught basic skills of table tennis.
National technical director of ZTTU Newman Gomendo said the clinic was aimed at grooming more table tennis coaches in the province.
“We have been moving around the country and this is the first Level One coaching course to be held in Bulawayo. As ZTTU, we are trying to promote the game at the grassroots level and that is why we partnered with Naph, who I believe are the backbone of all sports in the country,” said Gomendo.
“The game has been non-existent across the country in which Bulawayo was once dominant. We want to revitalise the sport at the grassroots level in order to get new players that might represent the country.”
Gomendo also said the course would assist the police prepare for the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO) Games where table tennis will be introduced.
He indicated that ZTTU would bring the Level Two coaching clinic to Bulawayo in 2017. The two-day event will end today with participants being given tips on table tennis officiating.
