A major dam at Premier African Minerals’ Zulu Lithium Mine in Fort Rixon has begun spilling following heavy rains, a development that is expected to unlock significant agricultural opportunities for surrounding communities while strengthening local food security.

The dam, located along the Machakwe River, forms part of the mining company’s broader community development strategy aimed at ensuring that the benefits of the multi-million-dollar lithium project extend beyond mining operations.

In previous interviews with the Chronicle, mine officials said surplus water from the dam will be channelled towards the establishment of an irrigation scheme, enabling nearby communities to embark on sustainable farming projects and improve household food production.

The initiative dovetails with the Second Republic’s development philosophy, “Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabaninilo,” which emphasises empowering local communities to take ownership of development initiatives and shape their own economic future.

Announcing the milestone on social media, the company said excitement around the project was building as construction progressed.

“Excitement at Zulu (dam) is beginning to spill over as the project advances,” the company said.

The development comes as the Matabeleland South region has been receiving substantial rainfall in recent weeks, helping to boost water levels in the partially completed reservoir.

Beyond mining, the company has indicated that agriculture will play a critical role in uplifting communities in Fort Rixon by taking advantage of the abundant water resources being developed within the mining concession.

With the dam now over spilling, the project is expected to transform the Fort Rixon area into a hub of both mining and agricultural activity, offering communities a pathway to improved livelihoods and greater economic resilience.
