ZIMBABWEAN coach Phillip Zulu is hoping to join South Africa giants Kaizer Chiefs as head coach for the youth and academy teams. Zulu, who has a strong background working in the junior development structures in England, is one of the several local and international candidates that have responded to Chiefs’ advert.
Chiefs have indicated that they want strong junior development programmes and structures that seek to be streamlined in line with the global trends, focusing on producing talent for external markets.
Zulu yesterday told The Herald that he believes he has the qualities to make it at the Naturena although he expects tough competition from a strong field of applicants.
“It’s tough because there is a lot of interest from foreign coaches as well with vast experience but I believe in my abilities, experience and the work that I have done in UK, especially when I worked as a scout for Leeds United FC Academy and in the wider grassroots of most junior development programmes that helped me to develop as a coach.
“To date, I have some of the most exciting young players in top professional academies.
“We have some young players who have progressed into professional football and many upcoming who are slowly progressing into established youth teams, non-league football and semi-professional.
“That alone, is my testament that I am more than fit for the job and the most exciting candidate.
“Remember, our programmes have produced international players for countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe (soon most of these young players are due for national duties).
“I have worked with Munyaradzi Mbanje (ex-Leeds United), Moses Abiyoye (current Leeds United FC), Tavonga Khuleya, Erico Souza, Arnold Sibanda, Martin Zulu, Depo Olusani, and many others. Some of them have gone into professional football with other clubs,” said Zulu.
Zulu, who is currently working on his UEFA B Licence, is also a holder of a Futsal coaching certificate, FA Junior Coaching Level 1 and Level 2, FA Open Age Coaching Level One and Two attained during his stint in England, among his qualifications.
