ECONET’S mobile financial service EcoCash has struck a partnership with Zuva Petroleum to enable its subscribers to pay for fuel using the mobile money platform.

This is the second such partnership EcoCash has entered into with a fuel retailer after a similar deal was reached with Total Zimbabwe.

EcoCash is linking up with various partners and suppliers in Zimbabwe to promote the use of plastic money as an alternative to using cash.

In the past few weeks EcoCash signed up Total Zimbabwe, Food Lovers and Zimpapers.

Econet Wireless chief executive officer Mr Douglas Mboweni announced the partnership on Friday as a strategy of promoting the use of plastic money and reducing demand for cash.

He said: “In our continuous endeavour to bring convenience to our customers we’re actively promoting the use of EcoCash as a preferred method of payment.

The partnership we have entered into with Zuva Petroleum today is a testimony of the vision we share with them towards achieving a cashless society”.

He said this would go a long way in allowing customers to transact without the need to have hard cash, adding that the move complemented the Government’s efforts to encourage use of plastic money as the country moves towards a cashless society.

EcoCash general manager Mrs Natalie Jabangwe-Morris said: “There are still many retailers who still do not have the infrastructure that enables customers to use plastic money for the purchase of goods and services both in formal and informal sectors.

“We are therefore continuing to invest in the appropriate technologies, which include investment in POS (point of sale) machines and other electronic platforms, which lessen the reliance on cash for day-to-day transactions as we help promote the ease of doing business”.

The partnerships with service stations come about a month after EcoCash removed all transaction fees on merchant payments to subscribers, in a drive towards accelerating the adoption of cashless payments through the mobile wallet.
