COUNCILLORS from Zvimba Rural District Council yesterday elected Zanu PF’s Ward 16 councillor, Cde Spencer Magaya as the local authority’s chairperson.

Clr Magaya garnered 38 votes to land the top post beating Clr Chrispen Saidi who got eight votes.

In his acceptance speech, Clr Magaya urged councillors and council staff to unite for the benefit of the community through improved service delivery.

“We should be united and ensure that we work together in improving service delivery for our council so that the revenue we get from our residents is put to good use in pursuit of satisfying service delivery in our local authority,” he said.

Councillors and staff, he added, were supposed to have their hands on the deck in line with the “Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo” mantra as espoused by President Mnangagwa.

The President has called on councils to walk the talk as far as the development trajectory is concerned.

“As councillors who have been entrusted by residents who voted for us, we are going to ensure that we work as a team in ensuring, just like our President Mnangagwa encourages, that the community is developed by its own people. No person or place should be left out in attaining Vision 2030,” he added.

Zvimba district development coordinator, Mr Joseph Manyurapasi, said the new councillors should ensure that they come up with effective by-laws that will help push development and quality service delivery.

“As the people have entrusted you with the duty to lead service delivery in the council, ensure that you accelerate the crafting of by-laws that ensure improved revenue collection that will aid in ensuring that residents get quality service delivery in line with President Mnangagwa’s call for shunning corruption.

“Let me take this opportunity to warn anyone who will be found engaging in corrupt activities that the law will take its course,” he said.

Other rural and urban councils in Mashonaland West province that are expected to conduct elections to choose chairpersons and mayors this week include Chinhoyi, Makonde and Karoi.
