Zvishavane scales up waste disposal efforts

Locadia Mavhudzi Midlands Correspondent
Zvishavane Town Council, which was recently fined an undisclosed amount by the Environmental Management Agency for failing to meet an order to stop discharging raw effluent has scaled up its effort to comply with the environmental regulations on waste disposal.

Zvishavane Town Secretary Mr Tinoda Mukutu said they were now clearing land for the construction of a compliant dump-site on the outskirts of the mining town.

“We are compelled to construct a compliant dumpsite in line with the regulations of the urban councils act.

“While it will take us long to complete the project, we have already embarked on the initial stages of compliance.”

He said the construction of a compliant dumpsite would require up to $500 000.

Mr Mukutu highlighted that the council has tendered for the supply of a refuse compactor, which would also improve refuse collection as the council is currently grappling to collect garbage in high density residential areas.

“We are currently using three tractors, which are not enough, however, the acquisition of a refuse compacter will go a long way in improving waste collection.”

The town secretary also said they have placed strategic litter bins across the town.

Mr Mukutu said they have also engaged Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ) to resuscitate Mabhula Waste Water Treatment Plant to arrest sewer reticulation problems in the town.
