Zvishavane sitting on health time bomb

Midlands Bureau
A HEALTH hazard is looming in the asbestos mining town of Zvishavane as the town council is allegedly discharging raw effluent into water bodies.

The Environment Management Agency (EMA) has since fined the local authority an undisclosed amount and threatened to take legal action.

EMA Zvishavane District environment officer Mrs Sally Maguwu said the local authority was failing to comply with their requests.

“Zvishavane is continuing to flout environment laws by discharging effluent in water bodies, she said. “For the past six years, the local authority has failed to comply with orders from EMA pertaining to waste management and is discharging raw effluent into open streams.” Mrs Maguwu said there was a breach in council’s sewage ponds at Mabhala sewage treatment plant in 2005, which has not been fixed.
