The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign challenges Zimbabwe to declare a truce on violence against women and children and ultimately, to make it a permanent one
Women and children play a major role in ensuring food security, improved livelihoods in the development of Zimbabwe, however they have little or no status, they frequently have succumbed to a lot violence and abuse in the hands of their guardians, brothers and men.
Imagine if, for 16 days, there was no rape, no child abuse and fair enough imagine a world with rape and abuse.
The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign challenges Zimbabwe to declare a truce on violence against women and children – and, ultimately, to make it a permanent one.
Zimbabwe Women Bureau is taking part in the global 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign, which runs from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) through to International Human Rights Day on 10 December.
With the theme “From peace in the home to peace in the world. Make education safe for all”.
While the campaign runs only for 16 days each year, its objectives are reinforced by a national plan to combat abuse.
Zimbabwe is still home to high levels of violence against its women and children, despite a world-renowned Constitution and a legislative overhaul that safeguards women’s and children’s rights.
The Government, business, civil society organisations, faith-based organisations and the media are all participating in the drive to increase awareness of the negative impact of violence and abuse on women and children.
The campaign also aims to:
Challenge the perpetrators of violence to change their behaviour.
Involve men in helping to eradicate violence.
Provide survivors with information on services and organisations that can help lessen the impact of violence on their lives.
Therefore, ZWB joins the rest of the World in commemorating the 16 days of Activism against Gender Violence each year.
Zimbabwe Women Bureau’s vision is to build a Zimbabwe where women are well informed and educated about the issues affecting them in communities, are self-reliant, know and exercise their legal rights and are able to raise their quality of life without relying on outside or donor assistance and its mission is to improve the social and economic status of grassroots women by means of providing skills training, information, material and financial support of sustainable development programmes to women.
ZWB strives to better the livelihoods of women and aims to improve the quality of products produced and linkages to markets.
ZWB during this16 days of Activism against Gender Violence echoes the voice of women by recognising their importance in raising awareness enhancing agricultural and rural development in Zimbabwe.
Let’s recognise the 16 days of Activism against Gender Violence and have a world where women and children are heard, protected, uplifted and recognised. – Zimbabwe Women Bureau
