ZWSL champions Herentals Queens in 23-goal feast

CHAMPIONS Herentals Queens ran riot as they scored 23 goals without response past debutantes Shine Shine in a hopelessly lop-sided Zimbabwe Women’s Super League match at Motor Action Sports on Saturday.

The supporters were treated to an attacking game by the hosts, and by the time the teams went for the break, Herentals Queens led their opponents by a massive 14 goals.

Herentals forward Praynence Zvawanda scored a double hattrick while Maud Mafuruse had a four-goal haul.

Herentals attackers Melody Tatenda, Natasha Mabungu, Elizabeth Bvuwabaya, Tabeth Mutinhiri and Milandy Chimbwanda weighed in with a brace each. Shyline Dambamuromo, Nyasha Munemo, Polite Mabika and Elizabeth got a goal each in the rout.

Herentals coach Simbarashe Dedza was thrilled by the big win and is confident that the champions will retain their league title after making a flying start to the season.

“The game was great and the girls played very well. They enjoyed themselves, made full use of home advantage and scored goals.

“From the first whistle up to the last, the game was in attacking mode. The players showed that they are the real champions. Our opponents are new to the league but they are a good side. They had a moment of brilliance. They even initiated some attacks although they did not score.

“We want to defend our title. It is still early days but the team is showing much improvement. I have confidence in the team and the signs are there that we will retain the trophy,” said Dedza.

Herentals have collected maximum points in their first two games. In their opener, they beat Royal Platinum 1-2 in Zvishavane last weekend.

But Masvingo side Shine Shine have had a difficult two weeks in the topflight league as they also lost their opening match 2-4 to Midlands State University Queens.

Apart from Herentals Queens, the other teams that also maintained a hundred percent start to the league are Harare City Queens. They beat Maningi Youth Academy 3-1 at the National Sports Stadium B arena. Correctional Queens beat MSU Queens 0-2 at Senga ground. Black Rhinos Queens beat Yadah Queens 1-3 at Yadah ground.

Platinum Royals were beaten 2-0 at Manyame Air Base Sports Club. Mighty Warriors coach Sithetheliwe “Kwinji 15”s charges lost their second match on the trot. Platinum Royals last weekend lost the opening match against Herentals at Gresham stadium in Zvishavane.
