077 returns from exile

Type of film: Espionage/Intrigue
Age restriction: 16

With my review of each additional James Bond 007 film I find myself trying to recall my feelings after seeing the first in the series, about a dozen years ago. It comes as a surprise when I realise that, over the years, there has not been, as one might have expected, anything lamentable. Such as nudity, foul language or sex play.

I count it as a tribute to this highly successful series, as it demonstrates in defiance of the direction the movies have taken that it wasn’t, in fact, obligatory if one wished to attract audiences to descend to smut and profanity.

On the other hand, the series and this film in particular has never held back when it came to the portrayal of the most blatant violence. And I am in no doubt that it is violence the series trademark which has undergirded its success and perpetuation.

In the current film under review, which has delightfully revived Eastgate Cinemas to a happy and impatient phalanx of cinema goers, we learn that Bond (Daniel Craig) has returned from a self imposed exile, to a not entirely cheering cadre of MI-6 staff members; including most importantly its head, (M), as portrayed by Judi Dench. The actress, now about to have her 80th birthday, has used this film in which she dies as the vehicle for her retirement.

As has been the custom with each succeeding film in this highly successful series, one truly heinous villain is propped up to stand against our hero. In this film it is Javier Bardem (as Sever) and he is a truly nasty piece of business. The word sneering attempts to convey his manner of communicating.

The Gung-ho scenes of train and auto-wrecks are, as always in a bond film, something to leave you wondering how they were ever filmed and ever increasingly curious as to how British and Hollywood cinema manage to produce the entertainment which successfully lures addicts away from all that is otherwise available to them. Decidedly film for action fans. Head to Eastgate for a treat of multiple proportion.
