1 000 NOT OUT: Pep joins elite list in style

ON a crisp Sunday afternoon, Pep Guardiola led Manchester City to a commanding 3–0 victory over Liverpool, marking a historic milestone in his illustrious career: 1 000 games as a football manager.

The win was his 716th overall and 388th with the Citizens which is more than just a numerical achievement. It was a celebration of a career that has redefined modern football and cemented Guardiola’s legacy among the sport’s greatest tacticians.

From his early days managing Barcelona B to lifting Champions League trophies and dominating domestic leagues across Spain, Germany and England, Guardiola has always been more than a manager, he’s a visionary. His teams don’t just win; they mesmerise. With a win rate exceeding 70 percent, Guardiola stands alone among the 119 managers who’ve reached the 1 000-game mark.

His brand of football built on positional play, relentless pressing and elegant possession has become the gold standard.

“To reach 1 000 games in management is something very special for me,” Guardiola said. “You just want to do a good job, play football the right way and see what happens.” Guardiola’s managerial journey spans three of Europe’s most competitive leagues:

Barcelona (2008–2012): 14 trophies, including two Champions League titles

Bayern Munich (2013–2016): 7 trophies, including three Bundesliga titles

Manchester City (2016–present): Multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups, and a historic treble

Guardiola now shares space with managerial giants in the 1 000 club:

Sir Alex Ferguson: The only manager to surpass 2 000 games, finishing with 2 155

Neil Warnock: 1 960 games across 15 clubs

Vanderlei Luxemburgo: 1 819 games with 21 clubs and Brazil’s national team

Guy Roux & Arsène Wenger: Icons of French football with 1 754 and 1 702 games respectively

Manuel Pellegrini: Still active, with 1 566 games and counting

José Mourinho & Jürgen Klopp: Guardiola’s fiercest rivals, both past the 1 000 mark
