ANYONE willing to partake in the Zifa Eastern Region chairmanship elections will have to fork out $1 050 apart from having to fulfil curriculum vitae prerequisites.
Nomination for the Zifa Eastern and Central Region chairman’s post election will close on Monday ahead of the plebiscite scheduled for March 6.
Zifa is charging $50 for one to collect the nomination papers, while the $1 000 is meant for the election administration.
Former Eastern Lions and Buffaloes executive committee member, Ashel Mutungura, became the first to collect nomination papers for the election.
Zifa Eastern Region general manager, Tedious Machawira, confirmed that Mutungura was the only candidate who had picked the nomination papers so far.
“I am told that Ashel Mutungura picked up his nomination papers in Harare. So far he is the only one who has picked the nomination papers. I have not heard about anyone else,” said the veteran football administrator in a telephone interview from his Masvingo base.
Mutungura is a well known legal practitioner in Mutare whose romance with football administration dates back to the days of the now defunct Eastern Lions in Division Two before the team acquired the Chivhu United Division One franchise until it was promoted into the Premiership.
He was part of the Eastern Lions club executive for two seasons before the team was sold to Bantu Rovers.
Mutungura joined Highway FC and later Buffaloes football Club executive committees.
Machawira urged other prospective candidates to pass through his office in getting nomination papers for easier verification of detail.
“The procedure is that nomination forms are picked from my office upon payment of $50. This enables easier verification of nominating clubs whether they are authentic Eastern Region affiliates. The candidates are required to pay $1 000 election fee,” said Machawira.
Apart from the Ashel Mutungura, who appears the election’s early favourite, Harare-based Masvingo City chairman, Special Matarirano and Zifa Eastern Region board member finance, Davison Muchena were being touted as the other candidates that have not only expressed their interests in the regional soccer administration top post, but have since started mobilising for support.
