1 500 rural women to be trained

The Heral d, March 29 1985
THE Ministry of Community Development and Women’s A_ airs has planned courses for rural women between April and December.

The permanent secretary in the ministry,

Cde Angeline Makwavarara, said yesterday that the courses would involve up to the women. Speaking at a farewell party for the Danish volunteer group, which was working at the National Training Centre for Rural Women (formerly Jamaica Inn), she said  the women had been trained at the centre since it was opened by the Prime Minister Cde Mugabe, in November last year. “It is a generally accepted premise that education is an important prerequisite for enhancing the role of women in Zimbabwe.” It was recognised that most illiterate women needed to be restored to a level

of understanding where they could fully appreciate the basic everyday issues that confronted them.

“The issues of women’s education could be partially solved if a definite percentage of funds for development could be devoted to projects and programmes designed for women’s education and welfare.

The Pan-African proverb, “If you educate a man, you educate an individual. But if you educate a woman, you educate a nation,” has resulted in the empowerment of communities through women’s education.

The exposure of Zimbabwean women to education has made them more self-confident. The training of women in the rural areas has given them a voice in their emancipation, and they are now able to fully participate in socio-economic activities.
