One person died, while four others were injured when a South Africa-bound cross border bus side-swiped with a truck last Friday at the 238km-peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway. The Mfazi Bus, with 55 passengers on board, was travelling towards Beitbridge while the South African-registered Scania truck was travelling in the opposite direction.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkosilathi Sibanda said the incident occurred at around 2:45am near the Matshiloni area. He said the deceased and injured were taken to Beitbridge District Hospital. “Indications are that the bus was speeding and it encroached in the lane of oncoming traffic upon reaching the 238km-peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway,” said Asst Insp Sibanda.

“As a result, it side-swiped a Scania truck which was travelling in the opposite direction. One person was killed on the spot, while four others were injured.” Asst Insp Sibanda said the deceased woman was around 23 years. He said three people were treated and discharged at Beitbridge District Hospital where one of them was still hospitalised and in a serious condition.

Insp Sibanda urge drivers to be cautious and observe speed limits. The highway has of late been claiming several lives, with authorities blaming failure by drivers to adhere to road traffic regulations and speeding. There is hope that the busy highway will be dualised soon after Government recently invited tenders for the project.
