10 business and strategy lessons from marine snipers: Part I

Arthur Marara-Point Blank

Marine snipers are not your average professionals.  They possess a unique set of skills and qualities that enable them to thrive in high-pressure situations, where split-second decisions can mean the difference between life and death. However, their approach to work holds valuable lessons that extend beyond the battlefield and can be applied to the business world.

One of the key attributes of a sniper is their exceptional shooting skill.

They undergo rigorous training to develop precision and accuracy, which are crucial for their success.

In the business world, this translates to the importance of honing one’s craft and continuously improving skills. Just as a sniper practices relentlessly to perfect their aim, business professionals should strive for mastery in their respective fields.

Cunning is another quality that sets snipers apart. They possess the ability to think strategically, analyse situations, and adapt to changing circumstances.

In business, this translates to the importance of strategic thinking and the ability to make calculated decisions.

Snipers carefully assess their surroundings, identify opportunities, and execute their plans with precision. Similarly, business leaders must be able to analyse market trends, anticipate challenges, and make informed decisions to stay ahead of the competition.

Patience is a virtue that snipers embody.

They understand the value of waiting for the right moment to strike. In the business world, patience is equally important.

Rushing into decisions without careful consideration can lead to costly mistakes.

Just as a sniper patiently waits for the perfect opportunity, business professionals should exercise patience when it comes to making important decisions, allowing for thorough research and analysis.

Furthermore, the impact of a single sniper strategically positioned at the right time has been known to alter the course of battles throughout military history, even when facing overwhelming odds.

This highlights the significance of leverage and the ability to maximise impact with limited resources.

In business, leaders should seek ways to leverage their strengths, resources, and opportunities to achieve maximum results.

To gain further insights into the world of snipers, there are gripping movies worth watching. “American Sniper” (2014), directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper, is based on the autobiography of Chris Kyle, a Navy SEAL sniper who served in Iraq.

This film provides a compelling portrayal of the challenges and sacrifices snipers face.

Another notable movie is “Shooter” (2007), featuring Mark Wahlberg as a former Marine sniper recruited to foil an assassination plot against the president of the United States. These movies offer unique perspectives on the sniper experience and can provide a deeper understanding of their mindset and skills.

Some prominent snipers in history

There have been many famous snipers throughout history.

Here are a few examples:

1. Simo Häyhä: A Finnish sniper who fought in the Winter War against the Soviet Union in 1939-1940. Häyhä is credited with killing over 500 enemy soldiers, making him one of the most successful snipers in history.

2. Carlos Hathcock: A United States Marine Corps sniper who served in the Vietnam War. Hathcock is credited with 93 confirmed kills, although he claimed to have killed many more.

3. Lyudmila Pavlichenko: A Soviet sniper who fought in World War II. Pavlichenko is credited with 309 confirmed kills, making her the most successful female sniper in history.

4. Chris Kyle: A United States Navy SEAL sniper who served in the Iraq War. Kyle is credited with 160 confirmed kills, although he claimed to have killed many more.

5. Craig Harrison: A British Army sniper who holds the record for the longest confirmed kill shot in history, at a distance of 2 475 meters.

These snipers, and many others like them, demonstrated the incredible skill, courage, and dedication required to excel in this challenging and dangerous profession.

The world of marine snipers offers valuable lessons that can be applied to the business world. Their exceptional shooting skills, cunning, patience, and ability to leverage limited resources provide insights into effective business strategies.

By studying their approach, business leaders and individuals can gain valuable lessons in precision, strategic thinking, patience and leveraging resources to achieve success.

Let the sniper’s mindset inspire you to aim high, strategise wisely, and patiently wait for the perfect moment to make your mark in the business world.

You may ask, “why focus on snipers?” The answer is simple; there are striking parallels between their world and the foundations of success in business.

From their journey, business leaders and individuals alike can extract valuable lessons.

In the coming weeks we are going to be looking at some business strategy lessons inspired by marine snipers.

1. Define your mission

Marine snipers, known for their precision and strategic prowess, exemplify the importance of having a clear mission and objective before embarking on their work. As the wise Solomon once said, “where there is no vision, people perish.” This sentiment holds true not only in the battlefield but also in the realm of business.

In the dynamic world of commerce, it is crucial to define your mission and objectives with utmost clarity.

By doing so, you provide a guiding light that illuminates the path for your entire organisation, ensuring that every individual is aligned and working harmoniously towards the same goals.

A well-defined mission serves as the compass that steers your company’s direction, encapsulating its purpose, values, and aspirations. It acts as a unifying force, instilling a sense of purpose and identity within your team.

Furthermore, clear objectives act as milestones along the journey, delineating the specific targets and outcomes that need to be achieved.

They provide a tangible framework for progress, enabling individuals to channel their efforts effectively and measure their success.

When everyone in the organisation shares a common understanding of the mission and objectives, collaboration and synergy flourish.

Team members are empowered with a sense of direction, enabling them to make informed decisions and prioritise their actions accordingly.

Moreover, a clear mission and objectives foster a culture of accountability and focus.

With a collective vision in place, individuals are more likely to take ownership of their responsibilities and work towards the greater good of the organisation.

This alignment minimises confusion, reduces inefficiencies, and maximises productivity.

In the ever-evolving landscape of business, adaptability is key. However, a well-defined mission and objectives provide a solid foundation that remains steadfast amid change.

They serve as a constant reference point, guiding decision-making processes and ensuring that strategic choices align with the overarching purpose of the organisation.

Just as Marine snipers rely on a clear mission and objective to accomplish their missions, businesses must also embrace this principle.

By defining your mission and objectives clearly, you empower your organisation with focus, unity, and purpose. So, let your mission be the North Star that guides your journey, and your objectives be the stepping stones towards success.
