ST THOMAS Aquinas Primary will this weekend host the 25th Jen Townsend senior boys’ and girls’ hockey festival and 10 schools are participating.
The tournament has been held annually since 1990 as part of attempts to revive hockey at grassroots level.
Centenary, Carmel, Portland, Victoria, Dominican Convent, SOS, Baines Junior, Kumalo and Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) will join St Thomas to compete for the winners’ medal.
Kudakwashe Jairos, the festival organiser, said they had CBC Form 1 team as most pupils from St Thomas enrol at the school for their secondary education.
He said everything was now in place and all participating schools were looking forward to an exciting tournament.
“We’re expecting an exciting tournament as we’ve quite a number of sponsors. Winners will walk away with a floating trophy and other prizes,” said Jairos.
Centenary sports director Edwin Tholanah said they were determined to defend the boys’ title that they won last year despite the tough competition they expect to encounter.
“Every team wants to win so competition will be tough, but we’re ready, not only to only defend our boys’ title, but to scoop the girls’ medal as well,” said Tholanah.
He however said pupils were busy with mid year exams and as such training time was limited.
“We didn’t have much time to train due to exams, but we put to good use that little time we got,” said Tholanah.
