10 years for TelOne cable thief caught in action

A HARARE man (24) who was caught red handed by a caretaker stealing 3kg of TelOne wire worth US$150 in Belvedere, Harare, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
In a statement on X, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said “Wellington Mbaraza (24) of no fixed abode was brought before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing charges of contravening the Postal and Telecommunications Act.
“On the 9th of August 2024, the accused person hatched a plan to steal TelOne drop wires along Mclliwaine Crescent, Belvedere, and Harare. He used a stick with a hook to pull and cut the wires. He rolled the wires into six bundles which he packed in a white sack. He was caught during the act by a caretaker who apprehended him and recovered the drop wires. The recovered drop wires weighed 3 kilograms and are valued at US$150.”
He received a 10-year prison sentence, said the NPAZ.
