$100 fine for smuggling second-hand dolls

SMUGGLING two sacks of second-hand dolls into Zimbabwe from Mozambique through an undesignated entry point earned an informal trader a fine of $100.
Appearing before Mutare magistrate Mr Makamera Waini last week, the accused, Fortunate Makanyara, pleaded guilty of smuggling the dolls with an approximate value of $274, thereby contravening Section 182 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reforms) Act.

Makanyara was subsequently fined $100 or an effective 30 days’ imprisonment.

The State also seized the two bags of dolls which she had tried to smuggle.

In a separate incident, another informal trader, Rogius Kembo (46), a Mozambican nationality who was facing two counts  of smuggling goods into Zimbabwe, was also slapped with a $70 fine for the two   offences.

The court learnt that Kembo was caught border-jumping into Zimbabwe through an undesignated point near Cecil Kop Game Reserve and was arrested by the police before being dragged to court.

On both occasions, Kembo was caught with bags of second-hand fleece jackets.
